There once was a time when
Logan Square had a gap in the niche of ice cream. Besides a Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin Robbins and the musical San Luis Freeze ice cream truck roaming the summer streets, options were sparse. Then came Heavenly, a gelato and ice cream shop tucked back on Sawyer Avenue and operated by Larry Langowski, an Olympian. Langowski was the lone athlete representing Mexico's wrestling team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Enter the small shop and you'll find a large assortment of gelato and ice cream. There's a whole host of interesting creations to taste, and the staff will make sure you get a sample before making your decision. Gelato flavors range from triple dark chocolate, mixed berry and peanut butter cup to banana caramel praline, risotto (honey, rice, cinnamon, chocolate shavings), mojito sorbet and white chocolate raspberry. However, it's the fresh mango and Italian pistachio that Heavenly patrons just can't get enough of. At $2.75 for a small cup, $3.50 for a medium and $4.50 for a large, this ain't your budget dessert. But, if you're craving the Italian goodness, it may just be worth the charge.
If you're going for ice cream, selections are just as plentiful (but cheaper) with flavors like rocky road, coconut, mint chocolate chip, cookie dough, rainbow swirl and coffee. A single scoop will put you back $1.85, a triple $3.50. There's even a handful of Temptation vegan selections (coffee, chocolate, mint chocolate chip and cookie dough) served at the same price as gelato. If you want to spice up your creamy pick, get it served in a waffle cone for 30 cents extra.
In addition to its icy delights, the shop serves loose leaf teas, fair trade coffee (along with whole beans), cookies, cakes, pastries and muffins. There's little seating indoors, but when the weather is right, you can enjoy your gelato on the sidewalk outside the shop.
