Greek-American fast-food joints in Chicago aren't hard to find. By now, the pretty blond girl with the dark eyebrows and feathered hair smiling eternally while holding a gyros sandwich aloft is etched into the memory of nearly every Chicagoan who has walked into a mom-and-pop Vienna beef shop. Hub's has the poster too, but it also features a bit of art unique to the restaurant: One wall is dedicated to giant 10-foot by eight-foot paintings of scenes from Saturday Night Live's "You like-a da juice" sketch.
Hub's was made famous by the oft-imitated SNL skit, though it's been well known to Chicagoans for over 20 years. The successful formula is one part of the reason we're a hefty city: cheap, fast and delicious food served in large portions. What's the point of a 'lite' meatball sandwich, anyway?
Aside from the paintings, Hub's looks like almost any other fast-food joint. This is no ambiance eatery. Hub's is about eating heartily and eating cheaply, and its signature dish, the massive gyros plate, hits that point home at only $7. Sandwiches are on offer as well, and the chicken kabob, with lettuce, tomato, and, of course, sauce, busts out of its pita for only $5. Fries run an extra $1.50, but you're saving room for a gyros sandwich anyway. Extra juice. Grab a piece of the sticky-sweet homemade baklava for the perfect finish.
Hub's has on-site parking, and the only thing missing is a drive-thru. It's open 'til 1am on Fridays and Saturdays, making it a good place to stop in after a night at one of the nearby karaoke bars.
