The good news surrounding Il Covo's facelift has traveled fast, landing swarms of eager diners in Bucktown.
Executive chef partners Nino Coronas and Giovanni Carzedda have created an authentic Italian menu with unexpected twists, moving away from Il Covo's original modern feel. The minimalist two-level space remains the same, bleeding chic and classy at all hours, from the simple black-and-white decor to impeccable (and blissfully under-bearing) service.
Expect tasty and traditional fare from appetizer through dessert. Start with the grigliani mista (baby octopus, squid and sea scallops on a bed of mixed greens with balsamic reduction), or simple eaters may prefer the extra-fresh caprese salad. Don't miss the succulent meat and seafood plates. The involtini di pollo alla sarda, chicken wrapped in prosciutto with sage and wine sauce, is to die for, as is the better-than-grandma's pastas like the fettuccine Bolognese with veal, pork and beef.
The accompanying wine list boasts unusual native varietals from Italian, French and Spanish regions. Don't be intimidated; the bartender will happily guide you through a tasting in order to find the perfect match. If vino's not your thing, feel free to take advantage of the top-shelf bar.
