Forlorn lunchers in need of culinary excitement within their 30-minute break should check out this express extension of the local and popular Kamehachi mini-chain. The convenient cafe in the South Wacker building serves pre-made and made-to-order sushi. Its tucked away location won't hide it for long. The crowd, comprised of area professionals and assorted Loop passersby, has grown consistently; occasionally, the lunch line slithers out the door and the cafe plans to add a front porch to accommodate.

Fans of the chain's traditional sushi spread will be happy to see the menu here follows suit, offering options such as the AAC Maki (asparagus, avocado and cucumber rolls for $4), as well as staples like edamame and miso soup ($1.50). Unlike its brethren, the cafe also serves a variety of terriyaki bowls and combination plates, like the Cafe Combo, a spread of tuna roll, salmon, yellowtail and shrimp for $11.

True to the industry's cohesive and buttoned-up nature, the two chefs on staff have extensive experience: One worked at all of the city's Kamehachis, and the other has served the sushi biz for 27 years. A simple decor and minimal seating plays off the cafe's strengths as a high-speed spot to pick up gourmet eats to go.

Catering and pre-orders are available; delivery is limited as it's on foot.
