Editorial Review of La Tavernetta

Basements normally bring to mind images of laundry rooms, cobwebs and teenage angst. But La Tavernetta in Lakeview proves that some underground spaces can be producing places for authentic Italian cuisine. In fact, it's the dingy location that amps up the charm at this tiny trattoria. Exposed brick walls and an open kitchen create a casual, inviting atmosphere. And while there's nothing over-the-top about this place, candlelit tables, low ceilings and limited seating make it an ideal date spot.

When La Tavernetta first opened it invited customers to bring in their favorite bottle of wine. But the days of BYOB are no more now that Vito, the owner, has his liquor license. The wine list features a distinct selection of Italian reds and whites, and Vito's pick of the week (usually red) can be found on an attached Post-It note. After nibbling on complimentary breads and oil, you'll be lucky to make a dent in your pasta once it arrives.

Pasta dishes border the pricier side of things (average $15), but the portions are heaping and each dish comes with your choice of minestrone soup or house salad. The thick sauces here are what really matters; choose from classic choices like alfredo, puttanesca, and bolognese. And then pick your favorite noodle to soak it all up. If you're feeling like something different, splurge on the $24 zuppa di mara (an assortment of fish in a tomato-based sauce served with crostini and linguini). Or treat yourself to the $22 le due rossa (grilled filet mignon and lamb chops with shallot mashed potatoes).
