Make no mistake – Lawrence Fish Market is not keeping customers based on their décor. Between the bulk bags of sushi rice stacked on the floor, the bench seat plucked from a minivan against the shelving, the flickering lights in the refrigerated cases and the general dinginess of the joint, it all screams "hole in the wall." What Lawrence Fish Market lacks in appearance it makes up for in spades with price and speed.
If you are looking for a place with reasonable prices on sushi and maki rolls, done in a no-frills style, and to get out the door for a little cash – literally – LFM is your next new destination. Call in advance, let the couple who run the joint know what kind of fish you want and how much you want to spend, and they’ll whip up a tray with your needs and desires. Don’t forget to call ahead and be prepared for a bit of a language barrier, but with an afternoon of advance notice they'll have it ready for your in-home sushi extravaganza.
In addition, for the do-it-yourself sushi maker, the huge bags of rice are probably not what you need sitting around your home. However, they do offer well-priced chunks of fish like tuna and salmon, in addition to nori, soy sauce, sesame seeds and tubs full of more fish roe than you could ever use. Just need a small amount of tuna for some spicy rolls at home? They have small pieces of fish on hand that they'll dress up with a little ginger and wasabi for you as an extra touch.
If you're only into sushi for the scene, for rolls doused in mayonnaise with weird names, or to pad out the sake-tinis, stay away. Anyone else who enjoys quality fish at reasonable prices with no bells and whistles, LFM is for you.
