This internationally inspired cafe opened in 1948 as a pastry shop influenced by the Black Forest region of Germany. More than 50 years and two expansions later, the cafe still clings to its European roots: Expect waitresses clad in classic brown dresses with ivory trim, desserts served on delicate lace doilies and dishes like Spinach salad, chicken Florentine and Hungarian goulash soup. The service is stately and thoughtful, the menu chock full of lunch and dinner options heavy on fish, meat and wine sauce. If that doesn't inspire, check out the Scandinavian open-faced sandwiches, crepes, cold buffet or hot soups.
What makes this place stand out, of course, are the wonderful pastries that line the display case as you first enter. It's a Wonka-worthy site: cakes and tortes piled high with fresh fruit and swirling white frosting, cookies sporting sprinkles and chocolate, butter cream coffee cakes, marzipan and more. If you want just a nibble, sample the Swiss chocolates with a gourmet coffee. Lutz also offers breakfast on the weekends, beginning at 7:30 a.m. In the summer months, snag a spot on the outdoor patio for truly decadent dining.
