From the canary yellow awning outside to the unhurried atmosphere of the two-room interior, Mellow Yellow embraces its name whole-heartedly, offering comfort food in a manner devoid of rush or fuss.
Though there's a fair bit of Mexican food on the menu, the chili and crepes have earned this Hyde Park restaurant a loyal fan base that reaches far beyond the neighborhood, and for good reason. A five-time winner at the Taste of Chicago, the chili can be customized with a handful of toppings; "the works" includes chili, spaghetti, shredded swiss and cheddar cheeses, chopped onions and a dollop of sour cream, all heaped into a generous bowl or a warm sourdough bread bowl. The crepes are big enough to share but lip-smacking enough to keep to oneself, with flavor combinations ranging from hot fudge, peanut butter, vanilla ice cream and almonds to spinach, bacon and swiss cheese. (Vegetarian options of both the chili and crepes are readily available.)
Wristwatch-hawks stay home: Service takes its cue straight from the restaurant's name, which means you'll enjoy a leisurely meal here—complete with mixed drinks and thick slabs of apple pie or bread pudding. Breakfast dishes cost $3-$8; lunch and dinner dishes cost $6-$12.
Average cost: $10-$20
