Who needs hot dogs and nachos at the ballpark when you can have the great taste of homemade popcorn and other delectable snacks? While there's an abundance of hot dog vendors and dives around
U.S. Cellular Field, none can offer fresh popcorn and peach rings, courtesy of Mother Butter's, located just
two blocks east of the Cell.
Mother Butters starts with fresh popcorn, serving up the usual plain, cheddar and caramel offerings and coming oh-so delightfully close to topping Garrett's signature kernels. Small bags start at $1 and extra real butter is available for 50 cents (as well as 2-gallon tins, for those who eat exclusively popcorn). Prepackaged varieties get a little crazy: cinnamon caramel, bananas foster, red pepper cheddar and cheddar bacon. Next come fudges: rich, tempting, and the best way to cope with a Sox loss; hit up the strawberry walnut or the chocolate mint, each at $10.50 a pound. The traditional hard candies, gummies and sour stuff have a beloved section at Mother Butters as well, comprised of stuff like red raspberry dollars, peach or apple rings, and crunchy beads.
Mother Butters boasts itself as having a Louisiana flare, personified with beads, a subtle yellow and purple Mardi Gras color scheme and posters of jazz greats. The place also serves southern staples like pralines and gophers, and uses Cajun spices in the popcorn butter that are straight from the New Orleans School of Cooking.
