New York Deli sure doesn't look like much.
The decorations are basic to the point of nonexistent and the seating is minimal (but appropriate for the size of the space). The back is lined with refrigerators tall and wide, each full of either various-sized soft drinks or buckets of beach-bod-building ice cream, and shelves are stocked with bags of candy and junk food. If you didn't know better, you'd think this was a corner store, not the go-to Lakeview deli your grandpa has been telling you about.
But once you read the shoddy sign, "New York Deli," and order from a plethora of possible sandwich combinations ($6.95-$7.50), you'll be convinced. Select from specialties like the Manhattan Project (roast beef, ham, turkey, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, mustard and mayo on Italian bread) and the Trump (corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss, horseradish), or choose one of 12 (thankfully nameless) 'classics,' which come with your choice of cheese, bread and spread with lettuce, tomato and a pickle.
Soon enough—each sandwich is made fresh to order, so have some patience—you won't care about the meager surroundings, because an enormous concoction of Boar's Head meat, fresh veggies and bread will be obscuring your view.
