Healthy soul food is not a total oxymoron, and
Soul Vegetarian East isn't the only place in Chicago that proves this. For more evidence, check out New Life. Here, diners get home-cooked vegetarian and vegan meals at a decent price. The menu does have a few deep-fried offerings, but compared to the fast-food competition, there's a wealth of healthy items to choose from.
This is what it's all about at New Life: giving people in the community easy access to healthier lifestyle options. The small storefront sells herbs, natural supplements, cooking supplies and body care items (including a few brands that cost much more at Whole Foods), while the rear features a modest one-man operated kitchen.
If you can make it in for breakfast (sold until noon), definitely go for a steal of a deal: choose from four out of five items, like grits, vegetarian sausage, tofu scramble, breakfast potatoes and oatmeal for $6.99. The lunch offerings are more modest, but still a good value; you can get a veggie burger with all the fixings, fresh cut fries and an all-natural tropical smoothie for $8.50. Dinner is served a la carte with a dinner salad and choice of one entree, two sides and a dessert for $13.99. If you're not looking to gorge yourself, choose a sandwich (like the veggie BLT) or a side (the sweet potatoes are yummy).
