Editorial Review of North Coast

If you live on the North Side and love your Saturday morning hang-over breakfast but can't suffer through an hour-long wait, you need to know about North Coast Cafe. The restaurant has the zippy service of a diner but goes easy on the grease in favor of healthy, fresh food.

Decidedly less trendy than its neighborhood counterparts, a series of dated abstract paintings with splashy purples and blues hang on the walls and easy listening music is piped in from somewhere. But the camp factor becomes amusing, not annoying, in the face of North Coast's fun, value-focused menu.

Order up the Jackie O, a Greek sausage and feta cheese omelet, or head across the pond via the Prince Charles, stuffed with chicken tenders, broccoli, almonds, onions and jack cheese. "Royal Omelets" cost less than $7.50 and include a homemade muffin and a fruit cup. Like the muffins (so much better than toast), all breakfast favorites are homemade and include corn beef hash, banana walnut pancakes and a series of eggs Benedict varieties, the best being the eggs Florentine, with spinach, sauteed onions and grated cheese.

Greektown meets Boytown many times over at North Coast, as the gyros plate, chicken Mykonos, egg-lemon soup and Greek salad are popular lunch and dinner dishes. You can stick to your American roots just as easily with sandwiches, chicken entrees and old-fashioned garden potato casseroles, all priced below $13.

There are three sunny rooms to the place, with one still devoted to smoking. Whether it's because of all the space or the consistently good service, there's always a few free tables. BYOB.
