You've gotta love a place that's so comfy you can stroll in wearing your PJs. From the everybody-knows-your-name friendliness to the home cooking, this breakfast and lunch spot is pure comfort. For me, it was love at first site: The decor is as down to earth as it gets, featuring rustic wooden tables, a brick fireplace and a diner-esque counter with swivel stools, colored by kids' arts and crafts all over the walls and the generously sprinkled cupcakes behind the counter.
On the breakfast side of the menu, you'll find a full roster of eggs and hotcakes served all day. Omelets are a popular choice and a value at $5-$6 (that includes a side of rustic potatoes and toast). The Winnetka Scrambler, three eggs scrambled (duh) with spinach, tomatoes, green onions and cheddar, is a must-try. Satisfy your sweet tooth with buttermilk pancakes, Swedish pancakes or one of five different varieties of French toast. And don't forget to check the chalkboard for tons of seasonal specials.
The lunch menu is fair game after 11 a.m. Starters include nachos as well as homemade chili and soups, but save room for a BLT, a reuben, a tuna sandwich or, my personal favorite, the veggie hot melt (zucchini, tomato and swiss cheese served open face on whole wheat, topped with avocado and mixed greens). The burgers are definitely up to par, and ditto on the salads.
