It's easy to skip over Plenty Chinese Restaurant, tucked away in the middle of a fairly non-descript Montrose strip mall. Luckily, with a delivery radius that extends as far north as Hollywood, as far west as Central Park, and as far south as Diversey, you may never need to. Plenty Chinese extends both food and hospitality to everyone, and if you know the rules to Chinese Chess, you may find yourself invited to a quick match while you wait for your takeout order.
The space itself is tasteful and attractive, but there's seating for less than 20, and the focus is on takeout and delivery. Small as it is, it's clean and comfortable, and an overpowered air conditioner makes it a welcome stop on the way to Welles Park for a picnic. Be sure to bring friends, because the portions are large.
A nice way to start at Plenty is with the pork pot stickers. An order of six of them is under $5, and they're huge – nearly heavy enough to qualify as small baseballs. Ask for a recommendation and you may find yourself staring down the Sesame Shrimp. It's the priciest item on the menu at $12, but the amount of shrimp is generous and the dish is amazingly tasty. Not to worry, though: Most menu items hover around the $6-$8 for small and large dishes, making Plenty a great value for the amount of food provided.
Twenty-two different lunch specials are available for under $6, which include fried or white rice and an eggroll. Nearly a dozen vegetarian options keep the herbivores happy, and the tofu is firm without being too tough.
Plenty offers catering as well. Party trays are available for some of their more popular appetizers and entrees.
