This South Side standby's name is far from metaphoric. The Original Rainbow Cone has been serving up truly multi-colored cones since 1926. Chocolate, strawberry, pistachio, Palmer House (cherry, with chunks of cherry and walnut) and orange sherbet ice creams are skillfully packed into your cone. It's not just a novelty; this is high-quality ice cream (which can also be taken home, for those looking to lick privately). Families come from all over the city to taste this Chicago tradition and sometimes also sample the store's sundaes and floats. The Original Rainbow Cone is a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the trip.
