Who says organic means healthy-looking salads and tofu? Certainly not Mary Sopcic, owner of the Sweet Dreams Organic Bakery and Cafe in Glenview. Her bakery, built around the idea that organic food is better for the body, showcases some of the most delicious desserts you've ever seen (or tasted).
Marvel at big, multi-layer cakes like the Chocolate and Coconut Cream, Chocolate Raspberry Cream or Flourless Chocolate Espresso Torte ($5 per slice and $50 for a 10 inch). Items like cookies, cream puffs, fruit tartlets and rum walnut bars run from $1.50 to $3.50 each.
The large, comfortable space invites patrons to stay awhile, with free wireless internet and a small selection of available books. There's even a fireplace to relax by. If you're hungry for lunch, try any of the organic sandwiches ($8.50-$10) served with mixed greens, soup, potato salad or beet salad. You’ll also find soups, salads, quiche and choices for children.
The full coffee bar provides a selection of Americanos, macchiatos, mochas and more, all available with your choice of hormone-free milk or soy milk.
There is no typical guest at the cafe, says Mary's son, Lou. People travel from all over to get the cafe's organic or vegan desserts, which can often be difficult to find. Many local residents have even become more interested in organic foods thanks to the cafe's arrival. "We get a lot of questions about the organic food," he says. "In a way, that's part of the mission."
