Bridgeport's old hand for authentic Mexican food, Tacos Erendira has been serving up tacos, burritos and the like for more than 40 years, tempting intrepid Sox fans to make the long jog over to mow down enchiladas before the big game. Tacos Erendira has inevitably conceived its fair share of customer favorites, but is so consistently solid across the board that just about each entree seems to have its devout fans. It we had to pick one, the al pastor is easily among the city's best.
Don't expect to pay much more than $7-$8 per plate – the prices here are reasonable while the portions are aplenty. Choose between tacos, burritos, tostadas or tortas, then choose how you want 'em filled: chicken, beef, sausage, beans, avocado, stuffed peppers, skirt steak, beef or pork stew, or the aforementioned al pastor. There are other entrees – beef or chicken stew, an order of enchiladas, flautas, tamales – but it's understandable if, after 40 years, you're still stuck ordering from the first half of the menu. It happens; just try to wash it down with a horchata once in a while.
While you're munching on rice and beans, you can sit and ogle some of the taqueria's unusual decor: an old stove right at the entrance, several Mexican dolls greeting passersby from the window, and a surprising amount of Harley-Davidson memorabilia and neon signs for Royal Crown soda. Just the typical quirky characteristic of a 40-year-old Mexican joint.
