A perfect corner spot on a scenic historic avenue isn't easy to come by. Lucky for this taqueria to have snagged perhaps this grade-A people-watching location.
Even though its layout is similar to a hot dog joint's — especially with a bar overlooking a grill that's perfect for chatting with employees — Taqueria Uptown also offers four-top tables scattered throughout for those who don't want to get up-close-and-personal with the staff. A jukebox near the door blasts all your favorite Mexican tunes (and you can pick 'em, too, of course). Fake green plants hang from the ceiling, and faux brick walls covered in pleasant murals of the countryside create a calming atmosphere — especially coupled with the giant windows looking onto Broadway and Bryn Mawr, respectively.
Don't forget to order food after you've finished absorbing the atmosphere. The varied menu covers all your Mexican favorites, including the milky agua de orchata ($1.35 for a small, $2.50 for a large). Appetizers run the gamut, ranging from the botana mixta (two quesadillas and nachos covered in veggies for $6.95). Get an almuerzo (breakfast) any time of the day: huevos a la mexicana will only cost ya $5.25, and same price goes for the huevos rancheros. But if you're really pinching pennies, order the $1.65 al pastor tacos, also something this place and its sister location are known for. These cheapies come covered in carne (beef), chorizo, veggies and even lengua (beef tongue).
And while you eat, little kids run around and employees chat it up with patrons who stroll in. It's a perfect quick stop if you need fast, cheap eats on any given afternoon.
