When Chicagoans venture to Devon Avenue, it's usually for the Indian fare; little do they know, a tasty kosher treat is just around the corner. Tel Aviv Bakery has been putting grandmothers to shame for years with their flaky pastries and fluffy breads. One step inside this tiny storefront and the enticing aromas will quickly have you ordering one of everything.
If you're dead-set on limiting yourself to just one treat, try the blueberry or cherry strudel. Once you sink your teeth into the fresh-baked dough oozing with fruit, you'll be praising all things kosher. And just try to stop eating Tel Aviv's rugulach. These tempting little pastries are so good, they're sold by the pound. Try the cherry rugulach stuffed with jam and lightly dusted with cinnamon and sugar, or go for the some filled with chopped nuts and dates and drizzled with chocolate. Grab a loaf of challah bread (with or without seeds) on your way out. This fluffy stuff is a staple during the Jewish Sabbath and other holidays, but tastes just as good any night of the week. The bakery also has an assortment of cookies, doughnuts and bagels. Call ahead for large orders or be prepared to eat yourself into a sugar coma while waiting. Cash only.
