This tiny joint has been doling out affordable food for just over a decade, and once you taste it, you'll know why the husband-and-wife team has kept it up as long as they have.
With scant tables, the interior is tidy and flowing with takeout traffic (mostly Rogers Park locals). The menu is full of Belizean staples, including conch fritters, chicken tamales and the more exotic salbutes, panades and garnaches (deep-fried masa filled with chicken, veggies or beans). The chicken tamale, meanwhile, is a super-plump mess that had an entire tender chicken leg tucked inside.
Save room for the main courses, too, especially the tender oxtail and beef entrees, which come with foot-long sweet plantains and a rich sauce perfect for dipping your hot, fried bread. Tickie's has also managed to perfect potato salad, which comes with each entree. For dessert, sample perky coconut tarts, dense bread pudding and sweet milk cake.
Average cost: $10-$20
