When it comes to enjoying Chicago red hots in the burbs, Tommy's Red Hots in Crystal Lake should be high on your list. For years, it's been a top spot for lunch and dinner for anyone looking for great Chicago-style food without having to venture into the city.
The best bang for your buck and the most popular item is the classic Daily Special; two hot dogs, fries and a drink for $5. When it's your turn to order, you call out your toppings to a guy behind the counter, he speedily dresses the dogs as requested and you quickly move along—piling napkins, straws and small paper cups of ketchup on to your tray—and then grab a seat in the vintage '50s diner setting.
Tommy's also offers pizza by the slice, hamburgers, beef sandwiches and various other specials depending on the day of the week. It also offers catering and, if you can't get to the Crystal Lake location, head out the other locations in Woodstock, Algonquin and Glendale Heights. But remember to bring cash. Tommy's only takes green for the classic Chicago-style grub.
