Get goodies to-go at Vella
Patrons of Green City Market will recognize the toasty creations at Vella Cafe. Owners Sara Voden and Melissa Yen have been selling their sensational panini at the farmers market for the past two years. For months, they searched for the perfect locale to open a permanent space, and they found it in this blossoming corner of Logan Square. The charming spot makes a great place to land for breakfast, lunch or, as they call it, "blunch."

The new home allowed menu whiz Voden the freedom to expand her offerings, which range from breakfast delights like amaranth pancakes, stuffed French toast and spicy tofu scramble (with soy chorizo!) to fresh greens like the avocado-laden chopped salad with lime-yogurt dressing. And, of course, the "sammies" aren’t to be missed; we loved the sweet, plum-tinged BBQ sauce on the brisket panino and were also charmed by the marinated tempeh version sporting roasted veggies and spicy mustard. Entrees run $4-$8 and should be washed down with a delicious glass of creamy Vietnamese iced coffee. If you prefer to BYO, tote along a bottle of vodka to weekend brunch, and the girls will whip up a pitcher of bloody marys with their homemade mix and tasty shrimp skewers as garnish.

Place your order with the friendly staff at the counter, and they'll bring the plates to your table. With the L tracks hovering overhead, the outside isn't much to look at (save for some pretty flowerpots at the door), but the inside feels nice and fresh, with spring-green walls, a lot of sunlight and not too much train clatter. Besides, it's a small nuisance considering the benefit: Commuters don't have to go out of their way to take advantage of Vella's weekday morning special—grab a breakfast wrap and Intelligentsia coffee for $5.75 and head upstairs.

In early 2009, Vella began serving dinner Wednesday through Friday evenings. The menu features comfort fare like pizza, mac 'n' cheese and bread pudding.

Average cost: <$10
