Sitting on more than 300 serene acres of Cook County Forest Preserve wood, wetlands and meadows, the George W. Dunne National Golf Course (formerly Forest Preserve National) in Oak Forest is a highly regarded, publicly owned facility Designed by Ken Killian and Dick Nugent, two of Chicago's best known golf architects, the course opened in 1982. It features four sets of huge tee boxes, gigantic trademark sand traps, and large, sloping greens; playing at over 7,100 yds. from the championship tees. Illinois Open qualifying was held here in 1996. The straight, long ball is required here as several holes present forced water carries and many lateral hazards. The par 4 18th is an exceptional finishing hole with water to the left of the narrow fairway. A 42-station, lighted driving range, two putting greens and full-line pro shop complete the picture.
