Poplar Creek Country Club, built in 1973 by the locally renowned team of Ken Killian and Dick Nugent, is characterized by tight landing areas off the tees (especially the back nine); well-bunkered, sloping greens; a multitude of trees (including scores of devilshly placed ornamentals ready to stymie off-line shots); and water in play on 13 holes. Though only 6311 from the championship tees, this Par 70 course plays longer with only two Par 5's, both relatively short.
The real strength of the course lies in its four difficult and picturesque Par 3's. No. 2 plays at 203 yards from the tips across a lake that fronts a huge multi-tiered green. Centerstage Golf's pick as the signature hole on this Hoffman Estates Park District layout, is #8, a 201-yard test that requires yet another forced carry over water. The bailout area right is protected by traps, but even a lucky golfer in the rough will face a difficult pitch to the pin (especially in the front left corner of the green). Take plenty of club at #13, 175 yards downwill with a hidden creek 30 yards short of the green. The 16th is another good, mid-length Par 3 at 181 yards, again with a water hazard in front.
Of the Par 4's, #7 is rated the toughest hole on the course and requires two good shots to navigate the 413 yards from the tips to the center of an elevated green. A wide creek 100 yards short of the hole will catch a lot of balls from players risking a second shot from the rought. No. 10 is the other exceptional 4-par, 415 yards downhill with a forced carry over water to a large, crested green.
The Centerstage Golf staff played and rated this Hoffman Estates Park District course on a cool, breezy day late in May, 2003, the day after a series of thunderstorms rolled through the northwest 'burbs. We found the course in good condition. The rough was well maintained, the fairways still a bit thin. The bentgrass greens had a healthy dose of poa annua and were slow, perhaps due to the poa, the weather and/or the popularity of the course with seniors and mid- to high-handicappers. Slicked up, these greens would be a REAL test of putting skill. Though still damp (but with no standing water) the traps had plenty of sand and seemed very consistent.
Other Poplar Creek assets include electric carts with global positioning and a superb practice facility with a lighted driving range, a short game area, putting greens at the first and tenth holes (the course often plays back-to-front). A golf dome offers an opportunity to stay sharp over the winter months. An easy walking course, players will find sprinkler heads marked to the front, center and back of the greens with additional fairway markers at 200, 150 and 100 yards.
