Ragtime
Porchlight cruises along with the wheels of a dream.

Every season there is a show that demands to be seen by Chicago audiences. Porchlight's economically conceived "Ragtime" is that show. The grand finale to a season portraying the American experience set to music, this "epic musical in a jewel box production" single-handedly explains why this company has earned so many accolades and awards.

"Ragtime" begins with a brilliant and stirring Tony Award-winning script, music and lyrics, all based upon E. L Doctorow's popular historical novel of the same name. The original concept for the Broadway production featured massive sets, glorious costumes and elaborate props, including a real model T Ford, and sported a talented cast of 50 or more. Porchlight's production is a textbook example of "less as more."

L. Walter Stearns has cast an ensemble of 21 talented, energetic actors who, in many cases, play several roles. Using the compact Theatre Building stage to its full advantage, Stearns' cast delivers the drama right into the audience's lap, with Eugene Dizon's six-member orchestra providing satisfying accompaniment. But the production doesn't stop there.

Young Drew Mikuska guides the audience through the play's tumultuous story. Through his eyes we experience the wonder, sorrow and ultimate redemption within "Ragtime." Leah Rose Orleans as Tateh's little girl is equally adept at speaking volumes with a simple look, and together the two actors provide the core strength of the production.

Every cast member projects an incredible voice and commanding stage presence. Charissa Armon sings the pivotal role of Mother, whose emotional journey rings so true. Jayson Brooks' moving portrayal of Coalhouse Walker mines every subtle nuance from this tragic hero. Coupled with Karla L. Beard's Sarah, we cheer the characters' joy and become outraged at their oppression. Aaron Graham skillfully evolves from poor, Jewish immigrant Tateh into a self-made entrepreneur, representing the ultimate American Dream.

Even if you've seen "Ragtime" before, this production injects new life into this classic tale.

Runs through May 27 at the Theatre Building Chicago. 2 p.m. Wednesday (4/25 and 5/16 only); 7:45 p.m. Thursday (after 5/3); 7:45 p.m. Friday-Saturday; 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $34-$35.
