A forty-something professor of linguistics learns that her unborn child may have a genetic abnormality that would prevent the child from learning language. Through her relationships with several unlikely confidants — her much younger girlfriend, an elderly speaker of a dying language, and a gorilla at the zoo — Brodie struggles to decide whether or not to keep the baby who may or may not ever learn to speak.
