The Plagiarists present a play based on the worst naval disaster of the 19th century. In 1816, the French frigate Medusa ran aground off the coast of Africa. In the ensuing chaos, 150 passengers were forced onto a makeshift raft while the captain sailed to shore in a boat. When the 15 raft survivors returned to France to tell their story, they were blacklisted and slandered by a government desperate to cover up the truth. Using the survivors' firsthand accounts and a bizarre variety of artworks inspired by the event--including a British musical comedy and Gericault's notorious painting, the play unfolds as a collage of many forms of media and perspectives.
