Defiant Theatre

This not-for-profit ensemble, now disbanded, was ever striving to "subvert the social, moral, and aesthetic expectations of mainstream artistic expression." Says Chicago Magazine of Action Movie, their recent spoof/embrace of the cliched, but popular genre, "... it's so nonstop dangerous that no one in his right mind would do this as a stage production. But these people aren't in their right minds..."

Chicago Magazine chose Defiant as its "Best Experimental Theatre" in their 1999 Best of Chicago issue, saying: "Still blindsiding audiences with a trademark mix of slapstick, beauty, terror, and the wonderfully weird." Notable past performances have included 1997's Red Dragon (recipient of Joseph Jefferson Citations for "Original Adaptation," "Actor in a Principal Role," "Sound Design," and "Original Music"), and 1998's The Skriker (Jeff Awards for "Costume Design" as well as "Puppetry and Masks"). See their complete performance history...

Members include Jeff Arena, B. Emil Boulos, Kati Brazda, Matthew Callahan, John De Leonardis, Joe Foust, Jennifer Gehr, Linda Gillum, A. Bryan Guthrie, B.F.
