| For over 20 years the artistic director at Victory Gardens, he has directed more than 150 shows, including Charles Smith's The Sutherland and Jelly Belly, Jim Sherman's Romance in D, Jeffrey Sweet's Ties, Jim Sherman's The God of Isaac, Lonnie Carter's Lemuel, Steve Carter's Pecong (won a Jeff Award for Best New Work). He has also directed in New York, for example Jest a Second! at the Jewish Rep, Beau Jest at the Lambs Theatre, Greetings! at the John Houseman Theater, Jelly Belly and The Sovereign State of Boogedy Boogedy at the New Federal Theater. He won a 1996 Academy of Theatre Artists and Friends Award for his starring role as Clarence Darrow in John Logan's Never the Sinner at Victory Gardens, and he has been honored with the Illinois Arts Alliance Foundation's 1997 Sidney R. Yates Arts Advocacy Award and the Chicago Drama League's Crystal Award. He's married to Victory Gardens managing director, Marcelle McVay.
