| Miss Illinois 1999 was a piano major at Northwestern University, and second-ever female section leader of the prestigious Northwestern University Marching Band drum line. A member of Sigma Alpha Iota, Smalls was also the founder and director of "Boomshaka", a percussion and dance performance ensemble at NU.
