| Born John Kvalen in Vancouver, British Columbia, John Qualen (December 8, 1899-September 12, 1987) was one of the most-seen character actors from the first half-century of sound films, though his name was never well-known. After moving to the U.S., and growing up in Elgin, IL, Qualen won an oratory contest which led to a scholarship at Northwestern University, where he grew interested in acting. After working in John Ford's Arrowsmith (1931), he became a member of Ford's stock company, and worked with the director for 35 years, specializing in Scandinavians as well as other nationalities. He was also treasurer of The Authors Club, and historian of The Masquers, the Hollywood social group for actors. He and his wife Pearle Larson had 3 children.
