| Award winning director of HoopDreams (1994) produced by Kartemquin Films, an independent Chicago-based documentary group. Most film critcis and general moviegoers were aghast when HoopDreams failed to garner an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary. Explanations arose that Academy Members split their votes, nominating the film for Best Picture rather than Best Documentary, thus weakening its contention in both categories. However, the word on the streets suggests that The Academy intentionally shafted the documentary because its original capture medium was video -- not film. Sounds petty and pretentious, but hey. . . so are the Oscars.
