| Never really a movie star, despite having appeared in over 70 films, this former Northwestern University boxing team member (and Harvard Law grad) was was better known for scandals occurring offscreen. He appeared mostly as tough characters in low-budget Hollywood films during the 1940s and early 1950s. After his brawl with Franchot Tone (in which he broke the aristocratic actor's cheekbone, nose, and caused a concussion) over a wavering paramour Barbara Payton, he was essentially blackballed in Los Angeles. He was later accused of murdering his wife (she was found shot in the back of the head), and was sentenced to 10 years in jail for involuntary manslaughter. Released 6 years later on parole, he died within in the year of heart failure.
