| Dublin native who moved to Chicago in 1984 became a writer after being diagnosed with breast cancer, giving up a lucrative career as a lawyer. Her first script, The Orchid Eaters (a story about her native Ireland) attracted a great deal of attention from major directors, but Crowe wanted to direct the film version herself. In order to showcase her directorial talents, she filmed a romantic comedy Fiona's Fortune with a cast from Steppenwolf and Second City. The film, set in Chicago's art world, was shown at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
