Count on a friendly welcome and the heady smell of nag champa to greet you at the door of this yoga studio. Thanks to recent renovations, Namaskar has expanded to meet the needs of its growing community. The original space, which once doubled as a boutique, is now solely dedicated to stretching the minds and bodies of yogi aspirants. A changing room is still in the works, so arrive fully dressed and ready to sweat if you don't want to strip in the bathroom.
The Namaskar Boutique, now two storefronts north of the studio at 3950 N. Southport, offers premium yoga clothing to help you suit up. Beyond comfy pants and natural fiber sweaters, the store sells other accessories, including mats, props and inspirational CDs.
The Classes: Classes center on yoga basics, breathwork and Vinyasa flows for all levels. Private courses are available, though group sessions are still small enough to soak in plenty of one-on-one time. Sunday's moving meditation class is particularly popular. Attendees help determine the nature of this experimental healing program.
Expect to pay $15 per drop-in. Deals are offered by the series ($75 for five classes; $130 for ten). Sliding scale payments or "donations" are also welcome.
The Extras: Namaskar now offers private massage sessions as a part of its Wellness Center, basically a one-room affair in the back of the Boutique. Call to make appointments with certified therapists. You can choose your own adventure with custom bodywork ranging from Reiki, Shiatsu, Thai massage and past-life regression to Ayurveda and energy healings. Candles, incense and music help to cultivate a relaxing atmosphere.
Much more than just a yoga studio, Namaskar has everything a yogi needs to connect body and mind.
