With its black-and-white-tiled floor, mirror-lined walls and scattered piles of mismatched pillows, Sweet Magic Studio looks like the kind of place your kooky aunt would go to have powwows with her friends (note the plastic flowers and bowls of fake fruit as you walk in). Despite first impressions, this one-room yoga, belly-dancing and tai chi studio is a popular neighborhood spot for both die hard yogis and first-time dancers alike.
The lead instructor, Kareena, has over forty years of experience in yoga under her belt (and the stare-worthy flexibility to prove it), while two other instructors round out the staff roster with different versions of tai chi. Despite ground-level windows that look into the room, gauzy curtains keep the space sunny yet intimate.
The Classes: Yoga, belly-dancing and tai chi (yine and yang styles) make up the entire schedule here, with classes held mainly in mid-morning and evening. The schedule changes monthly, and classes tend to stay small, with less than ten students.
The Extras: Various packages will save you from starving from your yoga habit. A single class costs $15 while a one-month unlimited pass will set you back $100. To learn more about the theory behind the poses, sign up for a two-hour evening workshop on everything from aligning your spine to aligning your chakras.
